By its very nature, motorcycling is a risky activity. Nothing can make it not risky, nothing can make it perfectly safe... but, why wouldn't you take whatever steps you need to, to try and make it safer for yourself?
Office for National Statistics :
Motorcyclists represent 1% of traffic but account for 20% of those killed or seriously injured (KSI). Motorcyclists are 40x more likely to be killed than car drivers
To minimise your chances of being affected by adverse riding conditions, or other people's mistakes, you need to take a planned and systematic approach to your riding. This means you'll anticipate hazards, spot them earlier and allow enough time and space to avoid them altogether. Even in the worse case scenario, you'll give yourself enough time to take evasive action. Thinking ahead means that every manoeuvre is made in good time and under control
We teach you the SYSTEM used by Advanced Riders and the Police. Applying the SYSTEM doesn't remove every risk, but it does make you a significantly safer rider and you still have plenty of fun!
You'll learn techniques and skills which enable you to get the most out of your riding and enjoy your motorbike to the full. Going 'quick' isn't about going in a straight line at triple digits... anyone can do that, going around a corner quickly AND safely, that's a different story! Filtering through traffic is one of the main advantages of having a Motorcycle, especially in cities and towns, but it's ridiculously dangerous... advanced riders still filter, we just try to mitigate the risks. We still get to the front of the traffic faster than anyone in a car, we just have less risk of injury and death when doing so.
When you pass your Advanced Test and become a Full Member, you have access to IAM Surety insurance. 90% of IAM members enjoy significant savings on their premium. But it doesn't stop there, as the majority of decent insurers will offer you a discount for having passed your IAM Advanced Rider course and even better than that, once you've passed it, you get that discount forever.
As a motorcyclist, whether you realise it or not, you're the 1% minority of road users and are automatically in a sub-culture. There's not that many of us around! Joining HERAM introduces you to other like-minded people, where you'll make new friends who share the same passion for riding as you do. We also like to socialise, we have regular social evenings in the Autumn - Spring and social rides all year around.
